The English and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
