Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
